The University of Hertfordshire was founded in 1952 and in time became one of the leading polytechnic institutes in Britain. In 1992 it gained university status and is currently one of the best modern educational establishments in the country. It offers excellence in teaching, learning and research and puts students at the heart of its activities. With a student community of 23, 000, including more than 2,000 international students from over eighty five countries, the University has a global network of over 160,000 alumni. Based in Hatfield just north of London, the University has a diverse and vibrant community that attracts people from all over the world. The campus, located on two main sites less than 1 km apart is safe, close enough to London to make use of everything it offers, yet surrounded by the beauty of rural Hertfordshire.

The School of Creative Art's origins go back 125 years to an art college in St. Albans. A merger between the University of Hertfordshire and Hertfordshire College of Art and Design in the 1990s added to its creative credentials. The School houses wonderful studios for art, photography, multimedia, graphic, and product design classes including well-equipped workshops for metalwork, woodwork, plastics, and fabrics. The computer resources offer a wealth of opportunity for 3D modelling, multimedia design and work with sound, video and animation.

The University has exceptional study facilities including Learning Resources Centres which are open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day and have over 2,900 study places. As well as providing some of the best university sports facilities in the country, there is a 460 seat Auditorium which hosts the best plays, concerts and comedy the UK has to offer. The new £38m University Forum Development is opening in September 2009 and will include a 2,000 capacity entertainment venue, restaurant, style bar, club, coffee bar and convenience store.

The School has important international ties and its reputation abroad is very high. It aims to help students become independent, goal-oriented and resourceful practitioners who know the history of design and are well prepared for work in the creative industries.
