The 30th Helsinki Comics Festival took place at Lasipalatsi Square and nearby venues in Central Helsinki, Finland. It is the largest comic-related event in Finland and Northern Europe. The programme consisted of interviews, lectures, discussions, exhibitions, workshops, performances, competitions, signings and evening events.
During the festival BA (Hons) Illustration team attended a variety of talks and exhibitions from some of the best comic book artists around, such as Seth, Jesse Jacobs, Luke Pearson, Mawil, Richard McGuire, Max and Brecht Vandenbroucke. Besides, the festival gave a unique opportunity to meet people from the Europen small press and comics publishing scene, such as kuš! from Latvia and Stripburger from Slovenia .
BA (Hons) Illustration Programme Leader, Christopher Rainbow gave a talk presenting BHSAD Illustration course, while tutors, Irina Troitskaya and Evgenia Barinova took part in a two-day workshop/collaboration with Helsinki based artists Emmi Valve and Miissa Rantaten. The workshop was led by renowned Canadian comic book artist Jesse Jacobs. Each artist came up with a short story and then the stories were swapped between the artists, so the task was to draw a comic based on the other person’s story.
Students set up a table in the Small Press Fair, selling a wide range of prints, self-published books, cards, ceramics and t-shirts. The selection of artwork got a very positive feedback from the visitors of the festival, a lot of items were sold and exchanged!
All of the participants came back full of energy, ideas and inspiration, bags packed with comic books, moomins and liquorice that will last them for the next year!
